Side by side
| Feature | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| How it saves[1][2] | Individual topics, saved as you chat | Saved memories you ask for or it finds useful, and references to past chats |
| Which plans[1][2] | On by default on Free, Pro and Max; owners decide on Team and Enterprise | Varies by plan, region, platform and workspace settings |
| Past chats[1][2] | Searching past chats is on paid plans | Can reference past conversations when that’s on |
| Projects[1][3] | Each project has its own memory, used alongside your general memory | Default memory or a project-only memory; shared projects keep their own |
| Bringing memory in[4][2] | An experimental import of text you paste from another assistant | Not described in OpenAI’s memory article |
What neither does
Each memory stays in its own app. What you tell Claude, ChatGPT doesn’t know, and the reverse, and your coding agents keep their own files on top of that.
Claude’s import helps once, when you move: Anthropic describes it as pasting text from another assistant into Claude, an experimental feature, not a live connection.[4]
How to share one memory between them
Pick a memory both can reach.
Claude connects to an outside memory as a custom connector, on every plan, and ChatGPT on its Business, Enterprise and Edu plans (read-only on Pro) connects to one as a custom server, on the web. Saudad is one such memory.
Connect Claude.
Add Saudad as a custom connector on the web or in Claude Desktop. The Claude steps walk through it.
Connect ChatGPT.
On a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace an admin adds Saudad, or lets members add it; on Pro you add it yourself, to read only. All on the web: the ChatGPT steps cover it.
Tell one, ask the other.
Tell Claude something worth keeping, then ask ChatGPT about it in a new chat.
Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, and Free allows one. ChatGPT’s custom servers are web only.[5][6]
Should you turn the built-in memories off?
You don’t have to. The built-in memories keep working inside their own apps, and a shared memory adds what they can’t: one place every agent reads, which you can see and correct.
Questions
Does Claude remember previous conversations?
Yes. Claude saves memory as topics while you chat, on by default on Free, Pro and Max, and paid plans can also search past chats.
Can Claude read ChatGPT’s memory?
Not directly. Claude can import text you paste in from another assistant, once. For a memory both keep using, connect both to the same one.
Which is better, Claude’s memory or ChatGPT’s?
Neither reaches beyond its own app, so the better question is how many agents you use. If it’s more than one, a shared memory saves you repeating yourself in each.
What does Saudad cost?
€9 a month billed yearly, or €12 monthly, VAT included, after a 14-day free trial with no card.
