Which ChatGPT plans can connect a memory server?

On the web, ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu can connect a custom server, such as a memory, with full access: reading and saving. Pro can connect one to read and fetch only. OpenAI’s help article doesn’t cover Free, Go or Plus, and no plan can add one in the mobile app.

What OpenAI says, plan by plan

Custom servers (OpenAI calls them custom MCP servers) in ChatGPT, by plan.
FeatureCan connect oneCan save to it
Business[1]Yes, on the webYes
Enterprise and Edu[1]Yes, on the webYes
Pro[1]Yes, on the webNo: read and fetch only
Plus, Go and FreeNot covered by OpenAI’s help articleNot covered

OpenAI’s help article says custom server connections and full support “are available for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu customers on ChatGPT web”, and that “Pro users can connect custom MCP servers with read/fetch permissions.” It doesn’t mention Plus, Go or Free.[1]

Who can add one, and how

In a Business workspace, only admins and owners can create and publish plugins for custom servers. On Enterprise and Edu, admins can use role-based access control to let selected members create them.[1]

  1. Open Plugins.

On chatgpt.com, go to Plugins, choose +, then Add custom MCP server.

  2. Add the server.

Name it, paste its address, review the risk warning, tick I understand and want to continue, and choose Create as a plugin.

  3. Use it.

Install the plugin, start a new chat, type @ and pick it.

You no longer need to turn on Developer Mode first: OpenAI says the current Plugins flow adds a custom server directly.[1]

Limits worth knowing

  • Web only. OpenAI answers “Can I connect custom MCP servers on mobile?” with “No - web only.”
  • Deep research can use custom apps to read and fetch, never for write actions.
  • ChatGPT may ask you to confirm a write action, depending on the app’s permissions and the action.
  • In a workspace, ChatGPT uses a frozen snapshot of the server’s tools, taken when it was approved.[1]

Why you’ll read different answers

OpenAI’s developer guide says ChatGPT “supports both read and write tools from your server” and names no plan, while the help article limits full access to Business, Enterprise and Edu. Several third-party guides still tell you to turn on Developer Mode, which the current flow no longer needs.[2][1]

We follow the help article, because it is the one that names plans, and we’ll update this page when OpenAI changes it.

What this means for Saudad

Saudad connects to ChatGPT on its Business, Enterprise and Edu plans (read-only on Pro), on the web. On other plans you can still use Saudad with Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and your other agents, while ChatGPT’s own memory stays inside ChatGPT.

To hear when that changes, leave your email on the ChatGPT page.

Questions

Can ChatGPT Plus connect a memory server?

OpenAI’s help article on custom servers doesn’t mention Plus, so we can’t say it can. Business, Enterprise and Edu can, on the web, and Pro can connect one to read only.

Do I need to turn on Developer Mode?

Not any more. OpenAI says you can add a custom server directly from Plugins without turning on Developer Mode first.

Can I add a custom server in the ChatGPT mobile app?

No. OpenAI says custom servers are web only.

Does a connected memory change ChatGPT’s own memory?

No. ChatGPT’s built-in memory keeps working on its own. A connected server is a separate tool ChatGPT can read from and, on the plans that allow it, save to.
