Mem0 alternatives when you want memory for yourself, not your app

Mem0 is a memory layer developers build into their own agents and apps, managed or self-hosted from an Apache-2.0 open-source core. If what you want is a memory for your own Claude, Claude Code and Codex, look at a hosted personal memory such as Saudad or MemoryPlugin, a local one such as Basic Memory, or the memory built into each app.

What Mem0 is

Mem0 describes itself as a memory layer for LLM agents, in two products: Mem0 Platform, which Mem0 hosts, and Mem0 Open Source, which you host yourself. The open-source core is under the Apache 2.0 licence, and Mem0 also runs a hosted server your agents can connect to over HTTPS.[1][2][3]

Its pricing page lists a free plan and custom plans. OpenMemory’s code was removed from Mem0’s repository in July 2026, so we don’t list it as an option here.[4][5]

Where Mem0 is the better choice

  • You’re building an app and want memory for its users: Mem0 has a Python library and an npm package.
  • You want to self-host the engine, or deploy it on your own premises on a custom plan.[1][4]

Which to choose

Choose Mem0 if…

  • You’re building memory into your own product.
  • You want an engine you can self-host.

Choose Saudad if…

  • You want your own agents to share one memory today, with nothing to build.
  • You want to see, edit, undo and export what they remember.

Questions

Why trust a comparison written by Saudad?

Don’t take it on trust: every fact about Mem0 links Mem0’s own pages, with the date we read them, and we say where Mem0 is the better choice. If something here is out of date, the source link is the place to check.

Is OpenMemory still available?

Mem0 removed OpenMemory from its repository in July 2026. Its marketing page still describes it, so check Mem0’s own pages for its current status.

Can I use Mem0 as a personal memory for Claude?

Mem0 runs a hosted server agents can connect to, and it’s built for developers. If you want to connect your own agents without building anything, a personal memory such as Saudad is the simpler fit.

What does Saudad cost?

€9 a month billed yearly, or €12 monthly, VAT included, after a 14-day free trial with no card.
